If you are thinking about making a career and/or industry change, you must be able to adequately address an interviewer's concerns about your lack of experience in the field in which you want to work.
There are few job candidates who fit every requirement for a job. Almost everyone has a weakness or missing skill they have to work around in the interview. An effective strategy is to focus on the skills you do have!
So, how will you respond when the interviewer says, "I am concerned with your lack of direct experience (or education / training) in this area." Acknowledge the concern. Show your strengths.
ANSWER: "That's a reasonable concern. I'd like to share some additional information. My own experience, along with industry research, has provided me with a good idea what it takes to be successful in this field. I already possess many skills and qualities that will be of help, for example:
- Astute analytical ability
- Attention to detail
- Focus on results / result-oriented
- Staying updated on industry dynamics and professional certifications
- An ability to establish rapport and productive work relationships both independently and as a team member.
- Project management and follow-through
- Flexibility in responding to changing priorities
You can continue by asking if the interviewer would like you to provide specific examples of your skills and qualifications. Then relate to the interviewer how you put the strengths and skills you mentioned to work in a previous job. Be aware of how relevant your previous experience is and how transferable it is to a new position. Transferable skills are dealt with in detail in an earlier post.
If you have the correct basic skills, along with the desire and confidence to learn and contribute in the new arena, and you have thoroughly researched the new arena, you will make a strong impression on the interviewer. Go for it!
