Resume

Following are examples of the PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE category, this one for a Chronological resume format. Begin with the length of employment on the far left margin - using month and year - example: 3/2004 - Present. Immediately opposite these dates, to the right 20 spaces from the margin - COMPANY NAME (capitalized). Under the company name appears the city and state of this employer. Skip one line and in bold type - your most recent title followed by the dates for the position: Senior Engineer (3/06-Present).
  • 3/2004 - Present BALTIMORE GAS AND ELECTRIC COMPANY
  • Baltimore, Maryland
  • Senior Engineer (3/06 - Present)

Notice the two different dates. The date in the far left margin is the total amount of time spent with the company. The date behind the Senior Engineer position is the amount of time spent in that particular position with that particular title.

Keep your present job description in the present tense - ALL others will be in the past tense.

ALWAYS list your present job/position FIRST and work backward chronologically.

As you continue listing one job after the other, make sure you do not leave a gap in your employment dates - the ones along the left margin. An employer will usually look down the left margin, first/quickly, and if there is a noticeable gap in the employment history, it may disqualify you instantly. I am NOT suggesting you lie (this could be reason for dismissal when you get the job). If you do have gaps, consider using a functional resume format instead of the chronological format. If there is only a month or two gap in your employment history, use the following reasoning:

You terminated employment with your previous employer on January 15, 2009 and began your new job in March of 2009 ... so you can claim part of January as being employed. So show the ending date for the previous job as: June 10, 2007 to February 2009 6/07 - 2/2009.

It is always best to look for a job when you are employed. However, in today's economy, that's not always possible. There could be numerous good reasons why you are no longer employed: relocated; laid off due to down- sizing or reorganization; company went out of business. Use your COVER LETTER to address these situations.

Your Professional Experience category should quickly illustrate your growth and abilities:

  • 3/2003 - Present SOUTHERN STATES COMPANY
  • Bartow, Florida
  • Cluster Manager (05/07-Present)
  • This is the first experimental position of its kind

A FUNCTIONAL resume format for the PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE category will be presented differently. Your skills / qualifications / accomplishments will be organized into functional groupings that support your objective. Instead of dates along the left margin, there will be bold CAPITALIZED headings along the left margin:

MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

QUALITY CONTROL

PERSONNEL TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

PUBLIC RELATIONS / LIAISON / CUSTOMER SERVICE

OPERATIONS

Under each heading indent and begin the bulleted description of each category. This format is an attention-getter because it shows what you have done. It allows greater intermingling in presenting skills gained through professional experience and personal experiences - trips, internships, part time jobs and volunteer work. It is obviously great for a career change and for re-entry into the world of business.

On the second page of your resume, you must list employers, their location, positions held, and dates, for credibility.

More category descriptions and interview strategies to come.
