The move from school to the workplce is one of the most profound transitions life throws at you. Here are five tips for making the transition from student to professional go as smoothly as possible.

• Adjust your focus - Think like an employer and using the self-assessment tips in a previous post, here, think about how you will be able to contribute to the organization's business needs. Put the employer's needs first.
• Work on your people skills - All hiring managers will tell you - a person who is likable and pleasant to work with is a more valuable employee than an equally skilled, or more skills, individual with a bad attitude.
• Watch and learn - Learning is really what your first couple of jobs should be about. Since you are a newcomer to the working-world, it is always wise to observe and learn from the more experienced workers. It will become apparent who the most respected employees are - model your behavior after these people. Ask for their advice. And learn all about office politics.
• Network - A good word from someone who can vouch for your character and work ethic is a lot stronger than a resume that says you excelled in English Lit and were the leading scorer on the football team. Although, both English and football will help a lot when presented correctly on an excellent resume.
• Continually update your resume - Even when you are quite comfortable with your job, it is always wise to keep your resume up to date. When you land a job, add it to your resume. Each time a significant accomplishment or promotion occurs - update your resume.

A new opportunity can come along at any time - being prepared with an updated resume could put you a step ahead of other qualified candidates.
